FAQ - Frequently Asked Questions

Q: How is sports massage different from other types of therapeutic massage?
A: A Sports massage require more firmer deeper techniques than other types of Massage. More friction work is carried out - this is where deep pressure is applied to tissues repeatedly to break down adhesions (sticky bits on tendons) and soften scar tissue.

Q: Does sports massage therapy hurt?
A:  As a sports massage needs to be applied deeper to manipulate muscle tissue more effectively. This can induce a deeper relaxation although at the time some techniques (not all) may border on the uncomfortable, some clients refer to this a 'good' pain. Some techniques need to be applied deeply but not so deep that your muscles tense up. This is pointless and of little benefit as the we are then working against the body not with the body. Your therapist should always have effective communication with you making sure that the treatment does not go beyong your limit. You may experience some soreness/tenderness in the immediate days following treatment but this is normal and you should soon start to feel the benefits.

Q: How do I know sports massage is safe?
A: On the initial consultation we will check to see if you have any contraindications. A contraindication is simply something that means you should not be given a massage or it could be seriously harmful. Contraindications include:
  • Open wounds
  • Muscle ruptures
  • Tendon ruptures
  • Contusions
  • Burns, Chilblains and Broken bones
  • Periostitis
  • Rheuatoid Arthritis and Gout
  • Bursitis
  • Myositis ossificans
  • Infections of the skin and soft tissue
  • Thrombosis
  • Artificial blood vessels
  • Bleeding disorders such as heamophillia
  • Tumours

Absolutely anything else you are not sure of!

Q: What should I wear?
A:  You may be required to undress to your underwear depending on the area to be treated, towels are used to maintain privacy as well as keeping you feeling warm and relaxed throughout your treatment. However if you would feel more comfortable bring/wear a pair of shorts.
Q: How long does a session last?
A: Sessions are available in both 1 hour and 1/2 hour blocks. Please note that the initial consultation will be included in this time in order to tailor the treatment to your persoanl requirements. The root cause may not be solved within one treatment and therfore more treatments may be required, however your therapist will advise you of your treatment plan, you need to maintain realism about what one treatment can achieve.
A: Yes – Sports massage is available for everybody. Everyone can be effected by muscle soreness, injury, tension, stress and fatigue. Some people prefer the deeper techniques used in a sports massage, than those offered during a relaxation massage. Always remember that all treatments are suited to YOUR needs.
